A survey finds where the moisture is coming from before any work is priced: moisture readings, the pattern of staining and a written report that separates condensation, penetrating damp, plumbing leaks and — only where the evidence supports it — rising damp. That last one matters in Southampton: genuine rising damp is far rarer than it is diagnosed, and treating a wall that has condensation wastes the money and leaves the problem.
Look for a CSRT (Certified Surveyor in Remedial Treatment) or Property Care Association membership, and prefer a surveyor who isn’t also quoting for the treatment. An independent survey typically costs £200–£400.
